It hardly seems possible someone could write a Kung Fu story concentrating on the human dynamics of a young girl growing into a young woman.He wrote about essence of the struggle we all have attempting to gain a greater sense of self; without ruining a great fight book.
Surprisingly, Jacques Antoine manages to convey an apparent love of the martial arts juxtaposed against the struggle we experienced in transitioning from our childhood into adulthood.
Are you ready for a fight story, a love story, or just a great story?
I must confess, this isn't the first time I read this book, in fact I've read all of this series Jacques Antoine has penned. This book was just as good the second time as the first time I read it. I sure hope he publishes the next one soon.

The first Emily Kane book "Girl Fights Back" is a unique creation. On one level it is a developing spy novel in the bare knuckle tradition, for which Emily finds herself embroiled and trained without half realizing it. It might also be seen as a modern take on the Kung Fu movies of a generation or so ago. But on a deeper and truer level it is a coming out story about a young woman who finds her voice, asserts her will on the world, and still manages to remain compassionate and unselfcentered. The main weakness in this book is the almost complete dominance Emily has in any fight no matter the size, skill, or speed the opponents have. This does not ring true when written about anyone who is human. It almost causes the story to land in the Super Hero category, which is not what I believe the author intended, nor what I would find very compelling.
I don't know how to explain Emily. Words will not do justice. Talk about a super heroine, she is it. Great story line, with great characters. You can feel the love that they have together. I just hope book two is as good.
First half of the book is quite good, with the story of a girl who's father is a driver/bodyguard to a mysterious government operative. Due to an obsession with martial arts, she's managed to get to her senior year of high school without ever having a friend. Okay, I stretch my disbelief enough to cover that. Okay, she's so awesome at martial arts that she can pretty much beat up anyone. I can wrap my head around that, too.
But then we get to the latter half of the book, where government agents and killers, after hunting her down, and getting the snot beat out of them, look up into her eyes. And they instantly comprehend her endless compassion and lack of anger at them, and proceed to fall all over themselves to provide her information and help her out in any way they can.
What the? Once I might be able to gloss over, but this happens multiple times in the last half of the book. Leaves me very conflicted, as I really liked the first half of the book. But I'm hesitant to continue to read this series, because of the whole buddha/madonna/mary sue vibe the last half of this one gave me.
I usually pace myself when there are several books in the series. These I ended up buying the next as soon as I finished the previous one.
Martial arts with characters, plot and excellent writing. Suitable for a teenager. No sex and the violence tend to be neither graphic or glamorized. Like many martial arts stories, the plot is not possible in many ways. But if you accept that you are reading fantasy set in today's world, you are in for a fun ride.
I was looking for an action packed novel with a badass female protagonist. This did not disappoint, but it was much deeper and mire philosophical than I expected. The writing was sublime and somehow I feel enlightened after reading it. It's one of those books that sticks with you for days after. Excellent, can't wait to read more in the series. I applaud the author for making a well written first free book with a proper ending, it's disappointing when they write a cliffhanger to make you buy the other books. I'll read the other books because this one was well written & didn't resort to cheap tactics. Emily wouldn't stand for that. )
